Personally, I like the breadth and variety of your work and since tech is totally one of the topics you cover, you writing about AI seems totally appropriate. So I am happy to read that stuff whether on this newsletter or a pop up - but if people have to affirmatively sign up for the r pop up I’m not sure it’s necessary.
Yes, the title of the newsletter says economics and maybe it’s not totally economics, but “full stack” is a tech reference and this is tech, and AI will totally affect our economy, so I still think it’s fine!
I appreciate that! I'm planning to do some writing that clearly wouldn't be in-scope for Full Stack. For example I want to do a piece like this (https://arstechnica.com/science/2018/12/how-computers-got-shockingly-good-at-recognizing-images/) focused on Google's famous "attention is all you need" paper. I don't want people who signed up for Full Stack to get annoyed by those pieces and unsubscribe.
Also, part of my goal is to find out how big of a demand there is for an AI-focused newsletter. If the pop-up newsletter grows much faster than FSE has, I might keep doing it (and refund annual FSE subscribers of course). I'm going to get a clearer signal on that if I'm writing for a newsletter that's branded as being about AI.
Relatedly, have you read "The Alignment Problem" by Brian Christian? It's a good book-length summary of trends in AI and machine learning, and I think it does a good job of explaining the details of technical concepts without losing the important bits.
Honestly, sounds like the kind of content I signed up to read from you, so no worries on my end either way. Looking forward to seeing your reporting on AI, will happily sign up when that one comes through.
This is great, Tim! I’m interested to read what you come up with, and have huge respect for pausing subscriptions because of the subject change. I’d pay for your wonkery in AI as much as I would economics, but not everyone would feel that way.
Totally unnecessary move IMO. Just keep charging and emailing the same list like normal! This would make sense to me as a "special project" w/in Full Stack Economics.
Thanks for your interest Shari! I haven't created it yet but if you're a subscriber to Full Stack Economics you'll get an email about it as soon as it's up.
"I expect to switch back to posting here at Full Stack Economics with a fresh crop of story ideas inspired by my AI reporting."
Looking forward to it!

Sounds good! I’ll sign up for the AI one as soon as it’s up!
Thanks for the heads-up. I'm excited for the AI newsletter!
